JW's hang on to Ecclesiastes 9: 5 & 10 fanatically to support their materialistic view of consciousness..... even though Ecclesiastes is a philosophy book written from a specific perspective - the record of an intense search
for meaning and satisfaction in life on the earth. The term “under the sun” is used 29 times just so no one would be dumb enough to misinterpret its point of view and make some sort of doctrine out of it. (OT or NT)
The point of the book is that a life lived without regard for God, is life lived without value. When life is viewed “under the sun,” it is declared to be
empty. 1:9.
When life is viewed as a gift from God, (“Above the
sun”), it takes on a new and special meaning. 2:24
The WT likes to pick and choose which verses to make a doctrine out of and which ones not to. For instance:
They don't adhere to 9: 4 where is says that "a living dog is better than a dead lion". They don't believe that literally. They openly teach the opposite, teaching that it is better to die faithful to the Watchtower policies than to die disobeying their dictates regarding the military or taking certain blood fractions.
Why didn't they craft a major doctrine around 10: 19 where is says, "money is the answer for everything"?
Noooooo, that might interfere with field circus. Can't have the brothers out trying to solve their problems with money, now can we? Nosiree, placing books and magazines for "free" is what is promoted.
When Ecclesiastes 9: 5 & 10 is read from the point of view it was intended, "under the sun", it makes sense in the way it was intended.
The WT selectively adopts a point of view that Solomon ultimately rejects!
And the uneducated lap it up, to their own demise.
